Not very long ago, I wrote a blog post about the legend of the werewolf, in which I indicated that I believe such a creature may be more than just a legend. I will go further to say that our world is far, far stranger than our modern, materialist society would have us believe. The materialist worldview cannot account for everything that exists. There are spiritual realities that transcend matter.
I like to think I am a rather orthodox Protestant Christian. As such, I am forced to confront the fact that our world is inhabited by beings which ordinarily remain invisible to our five senses. To deny this is to do a disservice to Holy Scripture. Scripture speaks frequently of these supernatural forces.
Angels, demons and yes, even elves may walk among us undetected. I myself have interacted with beings of a more sinister variety - though not by choice. I am not so foolish as that. It is worth noting that the Bible never denies the existence of the gods of other nations; it says that they are merely devils.
And if such beings exist (and they do) it is possible for such beings to interact with our material world. Poltergeists, possessions, and even creatures such as the Moth Man are manifestations of these beings. And if you’ll pardon my unhinged rambling, it is possible for us to interact with these being through certain rituals. Yes, I believe that black magic is very real, and very, very dangerous. If all magic were merely slight of hand, why would the Lord be so aggressive in purging witches from the land? (Deuteronomy 18:8-14; Leviticus 20:27)
However, we must not fall into the trap of superstition and assigning these things undue power and influence. They are but defeated and conquered spirits, now haunting our world as shades and spectres, shadows of their former selves. We no longer owe them reverence. We need only be aware of them. Do not seek them out. Avoid them whenever possible. And above all, make Christ your shield.
